The year 2025 marks the 200th anniversary of the death and 275th anniversary of the birth of Italian composer Antonio Salieri (1750-1825), one of the most important opera composers and most influential teachers of his time. Today, however, his compositional legacy is known to relatively few people, and Salieri’s music has virtually disappeared from the theatre and concert stages. What’s more: his name has been overshadowed by the legend that Salieri was a dusty and less inventive rival (or even murderer) of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; The wider public associates him with this legend because of the “thread” of artistic works that began with Pushkin’s drama Mozart and Salieri ( 1830), adapted by Rimsky-Korsakov into an opera (1898), and ended with Forman’s film Amadeus ( 1984), based on Peter Shaffer’s 1980 play of the same name.

At 18:00, a discussion on the life and work of Antonio Salieri will take place in the lounge of the Besední dům with Simona Šindlářová, curator of the Department of Music History of the Moravian Museum and specialist in 18th and 19th century music. Reserve your place by emailing besedy@filharmonie-brno.cz by 12.00 on Monday 10 November 2025.
